Icy roads are a major concern for drivers. The ice can cause vehicles to skid, which can lead to an accident and injury. Even driving at the posted speed limit can be dangerous. Below are tips on how to correct a slide in order to avoid an accident.
• Gently apply the brake with two quick presses, rather than a long light press. This will engage the anti-lock braking system and allow for better control when setting yourself straight again. In most cars this will release air from the brakes, so it is a good idea to check your brake pressure before driving.
• Turn the wheel in the direction of the skid. Do not counter-steer or turn until you have corrected from the original skid.
• Slowly release your foot from the brake pedal as you steer out of a slide, but keep it close to the brake should another skid occur.
• After your car is under control, turn off the cruise control and slow down to a safe speed.
